What’s in Your Hand?

I have a question, how many times have you told someone or yourself that you weren’t creative, talented, or good at anything? That many times? Okay, now let me ask you this, what is one thing or what can you do as easily as breathing? I’ll give you 30 seconds to think about it, anything longer is too long…and…STOP! There it is…that’s it…your gift. It’s the thing you DIDN’T think of because as I suggested, it comes to you too easily.

We are so quick to discount our gifts because they’re not something obvious or perceived as “special”. We often overlook the thing God has placed inside us that will bring joy, prosperity, and fulfillment, not just to our lives, but to others’ lives as well. Our gifts can be as simple as organizing a closet, planning an event, frying chicken, baking a cake, putting together a stylish look, or even talking people’s ears off (like yours truly).

Here’s a quick Bible lesson. When God appeared to Moses in a burning bush and told him he was going to deliver the Israelites (Jewish slaves being held captive) from the hand of Pharaoh (ruler of Egypt), Moses questioned how could he do such a thing? Like us, Moses lacked confidence in himself to carry out the plan God was calling him to do. He was fearful that no one would believe that God had sent lil ole him to do such a monumental task. But God asked Moses this one question, “What is that in your hand?” (Exodus 4:2) Moses was holding his shepherd staff. God told him to throw it down on the ground and when he did, it turned into a snake. God then told Moses to pick it up by its tail and it turned back into a staff.

So, what’s my point or the point of this biblical tale? I’m glad you asked. To Moses, what he had in his hand was a simple staff, something ordinary and “unspecial” that he used daily, but God used that simple staff to form a multitude of miracles, including parting the Red Sea, which enabled Moses and all the Israelites to escape from Pharaoh, slavery, and death. In the same manner, we can use our seemingly ordinary gifts and talents to do wonderful and miraculous things.

Just to be clear, your gift/talent doesn’t have to be used to do something as miraculous as making the red sea divide in half, it could be used to do something as simple as bringing a smile to someone’s face. And before you go thinking that a person smiling is no big deal, let me paint a picture for you, if a person is battling with severe depression and is able to smile on one of his or her worst days after eating a piece of your famous apple caramel cake, that right there is a miracle.

So again, I encourage you, in fact, I implore you to acknowledge and be proud of the gifts and talents you have. Stop disregarding what’s already in your hands because you may just be the miracle someone else is waiting for.

Until we speak again…Smooches
